Teacher Cuts Girl Hair

I'm a little late on this story but as a parent and hair lover, I was shocked beyond belief when I read this story. I'm sure many of you have already heard about it because i've been under a rock. But if you haven't here's the story according to NJ.com

A Milwaukee teacher was slapped with a fine this week and faces possible
suspension after cutting off a student’s braid out of “frustration” because the
girl would not stop touching her hair.

Lamya Cammon, 7, reported that her first-grade teacher brought her to the front of the class and used a pair of classroom scissors to cut off one of her braids as punishment. Embarrassed, the girl cried at her seat while her classmates laughed at her expense. According to reports, the teacher then remarked, "Now what you gonna go home and say to your momma?"

Eventually Cammon did go home and tell her mother what happened. Her mom is now calling for the teacher to lose her job . The teacher has since apologized for acting out of “frustration” and was also issued a $175 fine for disorderly conduct from the local police department. The district attorney, however, has declined to press charges against the teacher.

While I understand teachers are under a great deal of stress on a day-to-day basis, I am truly horrified by this story. If another student cut the girl’s hair, he or she would have been suspended, no questions asked. Yet if it's done by a teacher, who is supposed to serve as a role model, it’s chalked up to stress and frustration and punished with a small fine?

I would think the emotional trauma that little girl faced having to stand in the front of the room while she was degraded and mocked is probably something she’ll never forget as she goes through school.

From that perspective, the teacher’s actions were irresponsible, inexcusable and grounds for suspension, if not termination from the school.

But what do you think? If a teacher cut your child’s hair as punishment in front of the class, how would you respond? Would you agree with the teacher's discipline methods and leave it alone or would you fight to have her job?

I can't believe they are letting this behavior be excused by "frustration"! That teacher needs to be suspended. Cutting a 7 yr-old's hair should be considered a physical assault! that woman had no right to do that!

I can totally understand how a teacher can be frustrated when calls to Mom go unanswered and the only time Mom shows up at the school is when something wrong has happened. Mom doesnt respond to PTA/PTO meetings, Fundraising events, etc, Teacher conferences.

Teachers are human. Was this teacher wrong, YES. Can I understand being sick and tired and disruptive kids and piss-poor, sorry A* parents. YES!

Give the teacher a break. Sounds like she deserves one!

That is just pure ignorance what the teacher did, she should be fired.

Just because a teacher is frustrated doesn't give her the right to cut off a child's hair.

Wait a second, who said anything about the Mom not being an attentive parent?

Even if the mom wasnt an attentive parent, she could of a been a total and complete arsehole for all I care. That is still no, no excuse to publicly humiliate a child.

If the teachers reaction to frustration is to humiliate and violate a child then she really has no business being a teacher.

I agree that she is human however she is also an adult, who should know better.

As a teacher, I am completely horrified that this person acted in such a way! I have a couple of little girls in my class that do nothing but play in their hair. Does it bother me? Yes, when they should be paying attention and they are preoccupied by their hair. But as a an individual who loves her hair and can't seem to keep my own hands out of my hair....that would be the pot calling the kettle black. This teacher needs a real lesson in patience. She was quite ridiculous!

THAT TEACHER NEEDS TO BE SUED! WTH DOES SHE THIK SHE IS TO TOUCH SOMEONE ELSE'S CHILD, SHES CRAZY ! i WOULD HIRE PEOPLE TO GO CUT ALL OF HER HAIR OFF!

AND YES WITH NO DOUBT I CAN SAY OUT OF EXPERIENCE THAT THIS WILL DEF BE A TRAUMA FOR THE CHILD. CAUSE I WAS CONSANTLY BEING BULLIED AND EMBARRASED DAY IN AND OUT BY MY OWN TEACHER WHEN I WAS 4 YEARS OLD, AND NO I NEVER FORGOT IT AND IT STILL HURTS IF I THINK ABOUT IT.

HER MOM SHOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND GO ON WITH A CASE, THAT TEACH SHOULD BE PUT IN HER PLACE AND LOSE HER DAMN JOB FOR LIFE!
