The Denman: Modified

Last week, I did a post about my experience with the Denman brush. I purchased it for my daughter's hair but tested it out on my own and loved the results of my curls. However, like many of you know that if not properly used, it can rip your hair right out of your head.

Well one of our readers, Tia suggested modifying the brush to allow the bristles to work through more easily. It tried this over the weekend and all I can say is Thank you, Tia for the suggestion because it worked perfected on my daughter's hair.

Here's how to modify your Denman:

-Separate the bristles from the base of the brush by gently sliding the bristle casing upwards
-Remove every other row of bristles
-Close the bristle casing and slide back into the brush

Tip O The Day: Denman

Many of you may know that I am not an advocate for using a brush as a detangling method, that hasn't changed. Finger detangling is still my suggestion and preference. This is why I never owned a denman brush and didn't care too. But out of frustration with unsuccessfully finding brushes that will detangle my 4 year olds hair, I decided to give the Denman a try. During this trial, I found that the Denman is excellent for curl definition especially to create perfect ringlets at the ends of the hair. So while many of you have sworn off this "hair rippin" baby, it does have a convenient and safe use-but not so much as a detangler. I recommend using this brush for styling only and make sure your hair is well saturated with conditioner. It's perfect for creating curls.

Halle Has Fabulous Hair

I just read some of the comments to a post about Halle Berry on SandraRose.com,and was tickled pink that many of the comments were directed at how fabulous Halle's hair is. Nevermind, that the post was talking about the possibility that she may be gay. If you read some of the comments, many of the them totally ignored the topic and simlply honed into her hair, as if she can't do any wrong because she has fabulous hair. (chuckling) I find is amazing that your hair has that much influence over people think about you, overall.

Well, if this is true, and I certainly believe it is. I need to get on it and have fabulous hair everyday.

Having Fun Experimenting

I just wanted to share the results of one of my many flexi-rod styles. I usually use my flexr-rods on dry hair to create a curly fro. But a couple of weeks ago I decided to flexi-rod my hair without the traditional "twist-first" methods. And I loved the results.

Basically, I used the yellow flexi-rods. Instead of twisting the roots, I smoothed the roots and secured it with a duckbill clip and flexi-rodded the rest. I used this method to elongate the curl.

Honestly I didn't think it was going to work...but it did. The curls lasted about 3 days without the use of a bonnet.

For products, I used Cantu Shea Butter and sealed with Crisco. I set under the dryer for about and hour. Unraveled and was impressed. I will certainly have to rock this style again. What do you think?

This picture of Naomi Campbell has been floating around the internet for a week or so now and each time I look at it I cringe. And as I looked at it again, I realized that there is an important lesson we all can learn from this picture, DO NOT PUT TOO MUCH STRESS ON THE HAIRLINE.

The hairline is perhaps the most sensitive point of the scalp and wearing tight weaves, ponytails, glue, gels, etc. can all cause you to loose hair from the follicle. If prolonged for a period of time, the follicle will become destroyed and result in permanent hair loss.

So the next time you pull your hair back, if you feel tightness around your temples or your eyes pulled in a slanted angle-your hair is too tight. And for parents, avoid placing tight ponytails in your daughter's hair. A good way to tell if your child's ponytails are too tight is to look at the scalp, if you see little fine bumps around the scalp, then the hair is pulled too tightly.

So ladies, there is no excuse for this. Those tight ponytails, micro braids, and weaves may look pretty but they are damaging your scalp with end results that look like this...so not worth it.

This is a question I have heard frequently in the last month. I have been interning at a prominent law firm in Nigeria this summer and when people find out where I am working, they are shocked that they let me rock my natural hair because it is seen as unprofessional. Usually when someone asks me if I am going to relax my hair, I laugh and say that I prefer my hair natural. They normally look at me like I'm crazy and say that I should do something to my hair. I have tried my best not to get offended, but after three people basically told me I am crazy for wearing my natural hair in one day, I am through!

I know that Nigerian women prefer to wear weaves, wigs, and braids, but I'm not in that boat right now. Don't get me wrong, I think women can do whatever they want to their hair. Before my big chop, I was rocking weaves and braids regularly. Heck, if my scalp didn't scab up some much whenever I relaxed it, I would probably still be hooked on the creamy crack. With that said, I get really annoyed and a little disappointed that I defend my hair more in Africa than in America. A lot of the women I have run into do not embrace their natural hair and they try to make me feel uncomfortable about my own hair. Whenever they ask me why I don't do something with my hair, I always fight the urge to say, "Why don't you wear a weave that matches your hair texture or your hair color?" I never say that, but I don't understand why a woman wearing European hair is better than me wearing the hair that God gave me.

Not everyone is against my hair, many people actually like it, especially people my age or younger. They usually tell me I am brave to keep my hair natural. Often many girls tell me they have tried and failed to go natural because they don't have good hair like mine. I try and tell them there is no such thing as good hair. All hair is different and what may work for one woman may not work for another woman. I just wish people in Nigeria, especially women, had a more positive image of natural hair.

instill in all of our survivors is how to learn to let go. It seems easier to
live with routine of hurt, misery and baggage than to take a chance and release

I want them to feel encouraged to know that until they let go of their baggage they can’t free of their past. I encourage everyone to step out and take a chance in embracing their unknown. I believe it is a vital step in any women’s developing a sense of pride and confidence they need to feel whole outside of the traditional perceptions of beauty. This is something that every woman at some point in their life should experience.

A former American Apparel employee submitted internal documents to Gawker.com exposing American Apparel's hiring criteria for store employees. I must admit, I wasn't shocked by most of the information having worked in retail and sales for most of my career. I understand marketing and how the impression of the employee can make or break a sale. BUT, when I got to the part about the "trashy black girl" with "straight hair", the hair stood up on my neck. Here's an excerpt:

"none of the trashy kind that come in, we don't want that. we're not trying to sell our clothes to them. try to find some of these classy black girls, with nice hair, you know?"

i will remember that forever, especially the "nice hair" part. he was instructing another manager and i on who to look for during an upcoming open call, and i sat there dumbfounded, listening to him speak while the other manager made "uh huh, got it" sounds on her end of the phone. the other manager on the call with me later became a district manager, and at one point instructed me to tell two of my employees (both of whom happened to be black females) to stop straightening their hair. i refused to do this, but wondered if the mentality behind her request was related to what dov had said."

My daughter, who is an aspiring clothing designer and avid American Apparel shopper just placed a wholesale order from American Apparel for her first round of screen printed T-shirts. If I would have known this prior to placing the order, we probably would have gone with another supplier since my daughter and her customers buying their shirts would probably be lumped into their "trashy black girl category". I recently paid a visited to the natural hair care salon Too Groovy in Atlanta. My desired look was a curly ‘fro. The stylist Kisha* achieved the look by 1)shampooing and conditioning my hair 2) detangling and blow drying my hair 3)applying flexi-rods 4)sitting me under the dryer for nearly an hour 5)removing the flexi- rods and separating the curls. The results were awesome. The curls were uniformed and bouncy.

Since transitioning to natural hair ten years ago, I have found it difficult to find a stylist that can actually style natural hair. My hair is incredibly thick and long. I have even had stylist give up midway through styling my hair. Kisha* was a trooper. She was fast and talented. However, I had a problem with the pricing.

My trip to the salon cost me $115. That price knocked the wind out of me. I was under the impression that it would be a lot cheaper. While booking my appointment I asked the reception if the salon had a standard list of prices or if the stylist would determine their own price. I desired a shampoo, cut, and curly style. I was quoted a price that would be from $70 - $80. Plus, that price included the cut.

Also, let me mention that Too Groovy offers free consultations to determine a price and to gauge how long the process will take. My consultation was cancelled due to the stylist becoming ill. I was late the day of my appointment due to an accident and two lanes closed off on the highway. So my stylist didn’t have the time to cut my hair. We agreed on a shampoo and style.

When Kisha* was done she walked me over to the receptionist to pay. I was told by the receptionist that the price was $115. I asked her why was the price so high then she went back to ask the stylist for a breakdown of pricing. Kisha* stated that her rod sets start at $90, plus she charged $15 extra to blow dry my hair. Being charged to get my hair blow dried is unheard of to me. Shouldn’t that be a part of the service? I told the receptionist what I was quoted over the phone and she said that they are never supposed to give quotes over the phone and whoever gave me that price had made a mistake.

Also, after calling back to the salon to speak with a manager I was told by a receptionist that every first time client gets 10 percent off their first visit which I never received. There was no offer to discount me at my next visit or refund any money. The response was pretty much like, “You received your style so…..” I never got to speak with a manager but the receptionist said that she would relay my message. Later I posted a complaint on the salon’s website.

Tell me whose responsibility is it to initiate style pricing conversation. Is it the client or the stylist?

I finally got around to getting a shot of my hair while wet and this is the result of my curl pattern on Keratin. As you can see, it is noticeably looser than the first picture (taken about two years ago before my hair cut). There are some areas that I am gonna have to tweak when styling because the curls are too loose even non-existent. Otherwise, not bad. I was afraid that it was going to be completely straight.

Unfortunately, I fell asleep on my hair before it dried and now it's a matted mess, so I will follow up with another picture of my hair styled.

I love pastel nail color so I've been on a quest to find a pale blue nail polish when I ran across OPI's Shrek Collection. The shades are:

SATC2: The Hair and Me

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to go see SATC2. I am a true SATC fan that has never missed an episode the show or a movie. So my expectations were really high and the sequel did not disappoint. I realize that some people still have not seen the movie, so I am not going to say much more than that-other than it's a must see.

As always, the fashion was sickening, but for the first time I really admired the hair. I'm not sure if it was because I'm more into hair now, but throughout I was more interested in Carrie's hair more than her fashion. I know, what's wrong with me? I'm a hair blogger, suit me! lol

I really liked the deep waves she sported and kept wondering if her style was created by Bantu Knot Out or a barrel iron. So I did a little research and found how to get the look. It's a look that will look best on long hair but can also be created on bob length hair.

Start out with a basic blow out using a styling lotion like Bumble and Bumble Styling lotion.

Using a curling iron with a 1 ½ barrel, wrap hair around the iron without opening it and securing it under the clamp.

After unraveling the curl from the iron, pull the curl out by running your fingers through it.

Repeat around entire head

Btw, as far as my hair, I just wore a basic blowout the movie, nothing fabulous. But here's what I wore:
I've gotten a lot of compliments on the shirt. Believe it or not, I purchased it almost 5 years ago from Ravinstyle.com (which has now closed) for about $180. Jeans by Gap $68 and leopard shoes by Paris Hilton $98. Handbag by Gucci (priceless).

My Keratin Experience

Yesterday I went to get my first Coppola Keratin Smoothing Treatment. After a year of researching, I decided to do just it because I wanted to wear my hair straight this summer without the frustration of battling frizz and humidity. So when my trusted stylist Keenya told me that she was a Coppola Keratin trained professional, I knew it was time.

The Coppola Keratin Treatment is a smoothing system that infuses Keratin into the hair folicle to eliminate 95% of frizz and curl from the hair. It boasts to keep the hair straight and frizz free for up to 3 months.

There are a lot of mixed reviews on this products and a few horror stories, so I wanted to make sure that (1) the product was safe and (2) that it would not damage my natural hair. Also that I was having the service performed by a trusted stylist-check.

Since this is my first experience, I can only blog about the application phase and kill some of those myths and horrible stories I read out on the web. I will continue to blog about the experience as the time passes.

The Application

The whole process only took 3 hours. I was in the salon at 2:30 and out before 5:30. My stylist started by shampooing the hair. Then she completely blow dried my hair and proceeded to apply the keratin in small sections-similar to a relaxer application. She covered my hair with a plastic cap for 25 minutes. Then removed the cap and blow dried my hair again with a paddle brush. During this second blow dry, my hair was noticeably softer and the brush just glided through my hair. She proceed to flat iron my hair in very small sections using heat of approximately 400 degrees. She used the blow dryer and flat iron once more as a finisher for the styling.

As you can see in the photos, my hair is very straight. And over the next 36- 48 hours, I have to keep it straight and prevent any moisture from touching it. So that means no hair pins, ponytails, sunglasses, or anything that will dent or bend the hair. However, I can wrap it, so that's a relief.

In 48 hours, I will return to the salon for her to shampoo and condition my hair. She decided to extend it from the normal 36 hour follow-up appointment to allow more time for the Keratin to settle. I will keep you posted.

Everyone has insecurities, especially when trying out new looks. I would say I have been pretty bold with different hairstyles since my big chop, but there has been one area along my natural hair journey where I have felt insecure, twists. Twist outs have become my staple hairstyle and due to my fear of "old hair," I redo my twist outs daily. This has meant many nights with only a few hours of sleep, so I could rock a fresh twist out in the morning. Crazy, I know. During a visit home over the Christmas holidays, my sister and cousin saw my twist out routine and were shocked at my commitment to the nightly twist out. They often told me how beautiful my twists looked and asked me why I didn't just wear my twist instead of putting myself through the torture of twisting my hair every night. My response was a short laugh and then the phrase, "I can't pull off twists."

"I can't pull that off." This is a phrase I have abhorred since I decided to stop relaxing my hair. It was a phrase that ran through my head, every time I thought about going natural or I saw a girl walk by me with amazing natural hair. It's a phrase I thought I said goodbye to once I had my big chop and my hair was only an inch long. I know it might not seem like a big deal, they are just twists after all, right? Well, when I cut off all my hair, it was not only about no longer suffering of scalp burns from relaxers, but it was also about embracing myself totally. So for me to say that this natural style would not be flattering on me, sort of defeated the purpose of my big chop.

My cousin and sister finally convinced me to wear my twists outside one day. I swear to you guys, I felt the same way I had when I had my big chop, insecure. I could not look people in the eye at first, because I was so concerned about how I looked and I could not help but to constantly pull at a twist or two to make sure they were in place. Sadly, I only embraced the twists after several people complimented me on my 'do. Funny, huh? But sometimes that is how life works out, many times others see the beauty in you that you refuse to see in yourself. I have come to embrace my twists and even rocked them during most of my finals period.

Delshawn Rollins once trusted only fellow African-Americans with the delicate task of styling and straightening her tightly curled brown hair.

But that meant enduring hours of salon gossip, ordered-in lunch (and
sometimes dinner, too) and occasional mishaps, like the time the ends of her
hair snapped off after she had it dyed.

Fed up, the 35-year-old respiratory therapist last fall pulled out a flier she had for a new salon that promised to "work magic" using "Dominican styling." She was in and out of The Hair Co. USA, which displays the Dominican flag in the front window, within two hours, sporting a straight, feathery "do" for $20 less than she had been paying her old stylist.

When I got signed I was natural. I’ve been natural three times [since]. My hair grows super fast so you’ve seen me with my hair to my shoulders and you’ve seen it short but you guys have only seen me for three years and in that thee years time, you’ve seen me with a millimeter of hair, you’ve seen me with 14 inch hair, you’ve seen me with 16 inch hair so it’s tough to say that I’m a short hair girl or a long hair kind of girl. I’m definitely a stickler for playing with my hair a lot more than the average girl. But one thing I do love is to show my face so even when my hair is long, I wear a lot of ponytails and I wear my hair back. I love to show my face, it makes me feel like I have to be honest and that all I have is me, and I’m not hiding behind anything.

Never touch a black woman's hair!

This statement that has been ringing in my ears since hearing Neicy Nash, a contestant on Dancing With The Stars, caution her dance partner on last night's show. This wasn't the first time I've heard this statement; I grew up hearing black women declare this statement all the time. Plus, it was repeated over and over on Chris Rock's Good Hair movie. But for some reason, last night was it particularly unnerving.

Some say it's a personal space issue comparable to touching a pregnant woman's belly. While others say it's a matter of privacy. Certainly, no one wants someone touching their hair and run across a track of weave. Whatever the reason, it's a personal choice and not a "black women" thing.

The problem that I have with the statement "Never touch a black woman's hair" is the fact that it's a generalization of all black women. This is certainly not my feelings or many women like me. Personally, I want people to touch my natural hair and see that it is soft, bouncy, and not filled with products or weave. And if you feel the same way I do, the next time you hear someone make such a generalized statement, please politely let them know that that statement is not representative of all black women.

Yesterday while waiting to pick my kids up I decided to arch my brows since I had about 30 minutes to spare. So while pulling out the tweezers, they fell between the seat where I couldn't reach them. And after 10 minutes of trying I just gave up, but not on my eyebrows. I pulled a piece of thread that was hanging from my shirt and started threading my eyebrows. It was a rough start but I was determined to make it work because I had no time to stop by salon to get them waxed.

To my surprise and after a few hiccups, I got it, I got it! I finally got it to work and I was super excited about the results. I don't think I will ever spend another dollar on arching my brows.

People asked me how did I learn to thread...I watched Youtube. It has everything! lol

I Got A Cut!

I did it. I finally gave in and got a few inches cut off of my hair on Saturday. Nothing drastic but much needed because my hair had absolutely no shape. So my stylist Keenya added layers to give it a little needed volume. I haven't tested the cut with my curly hair yet, I will do that later this week. But she cut it in a way that will make my curls pop...so I will keep you posted.

This is one of the products from the Shea Moisture product line that I talked about in my post yesterday. I wanted to use it for at least 24 hours before I began raving about. And I did, and I love it. It is so worth the $9.99 and some.

I actually used it on my 4 year old daughter's hair because right now my hair is blownout. She has very thick, but parched curls. I have been using a mixture of coconut oil and conditioner to set her hair daily. But it wasn't cutting it any longer. So this is why I grabbed the Shea Moisture when I saw the natural ingredients and the PRICE. When I got home, I immediately applied it to her dry hair, detangled it and braided in four big braids. Fast forward 24 hours, I unraveled her hair is I could still feel the moisture throughout each braid. This stuff is good!

After visiting the Shea Moisture web site, I realized I have used their lines of lotions before and loved them too. So I will definitely revisit Target and stock on this line.

So I finally made it to Target last night to check out Miss Jessie's and the Curlz line of products. I didn't intend to buy since I am still stocked up, I just wanted to see the availability, price points, etc. To my surprise, these two lines were joined by Jane Carter Solution and another brand that I have never heard of called, Shea Moisture. Needless to say, I almost jumped for joy at the availability of these lines right in my local target. No more waiting a week for orders.

For those who have been asking for pricing, Miss Jessie's line mirrors their regular pricing. Target carries most of our favorites, so I was happy with the selection. The Curlz line pricing was very attractive starting around the $9.99 range. I was tempted to buy something from this line but I wasn't impressed with the selection.

So I moved on to check out this never heard of brand called Shea Moisture (4th and 5th shelf). What a selection! What a price point starting at the $9.99 range also. So I picked up some styling creme from this line. I will dish about it later.

Overall, I'm happy and will certainly go back to Target to purchase and support these brands. Have you been yet?

According to WSBTV.com, "Steve Harvey and "Nightline's" Vicki Mabrey will co-moderate a live debate at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center in Decatur on Friday, April 9. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the taping for the "Nightline Face-Off" and the first 600 attendees will be seated."

So if you are interested in being part of this event, get there early.

Side note: I would be remissed if I didn't add my two cents. Personally, I think they are beating the topic to death. I know plenty of successful married black women, so I don't understand why national attention has to be brought to such a personal matter. But, hey-that's just my two cents. What's yours?

Yes Urbanistas, the time has come again when we are booking our vacations, toning up and stressing about what to do with our hair. "What is it going to be this year- micro braids, twists, or cornrows? But definitely not that natural hair".

Recently, one of my closest friends who was on her way on a two week vacation called me to ask for ideas for her hair. She professed how tired she was of looking back at years of vacation pictures with her hair in braids, but she did not want the hassle of dealing with her natural hair. I gave suggestions and as much as I tried to convince her that she can go braid free (on even a two week vacation)- she was not convinced. Thus, she braided AGAIN!

Unlike my close friend, (let's hope she doesn't read this) we can survive without hiding our naturally curly tresses in predicable, signature vacation micros. It takes a little preparation and patience. Here's 5 ways how to:

5. Set your hair before you travel. So if your style is a twist-out, travel in your twists. I usually travel in cornrows, so once I settle in I unravel and go.

4. Pack plenty of going out scarves. These are instant hair dos! Go for bold prints, long scarfs, or head wraps.

3. Learn how to do a mean updo. A great option to wear into water especially if you want to avoid the shrinkage look after your hair is dipped in water. This can also be a post-pool hair do to don to dinner while still looking put together.

2. Pack accessories galore. If you can't get your hair to work right, fake it! Dress it up with bold earrings, flowers, or necklaces. No one will ever know you're having a bad hair day.

1. Embrace the beauty of your hair. What makes naturally curly hair special is that it is so unpredictable. So be prepared to roll with the flow. You may be thinking about wearing your hair down, but your hair my be thinking otherwise. So when the humidity hits it and it won't lay right, be prepared to whip it in a scarf or updo and keep it moving. So ditch those predictable braids!

Chrisette Michelle showed up to her performance at Albany State University donning a bald head. Right before her performance she said she stopped by a local barbershop and decided to shave it all off. Here's what she said in a recent interview:

"I was tired of black sistas feeling subject to having their hair pressed and straightened, and damaged with relaxers, and heat. So I wanted to make short and nappy hair fashionable, and let the industry know that there is nothing wrong with the texture that we have been born with. Like myself, I am sure many of you did not realize that Tyler Perry had a show. Trust me it was a shock to me too when I ran across it over the weekend. While washing my hair the other night my scalp needed a good scrubbing so I enlisted the help of husband. He has washed my hair once or twice before, so I knew his strong hands would do the job. So I closed my eyes and relaxed my shoulders and allowed him to work his magic.

Later that evening, still feeling the effects of his massaging wash, I wanted more but I wasn't going to wash my hair again. So I asked him to help trim my ends. Reluctantly he obliged and trimmed about an inch off the back of my hair.

A Man's Touch-There is nothing that can compare.

This happened on Monday night and ladies I've been swinging my hair and glaring at the freshly cut ends every since. Actually, I think I've become addicted because since then, I've been thinking of different things I can ask him to do to my hair, like massage my scalp, run his fingers through it, etc. I told a friend yesterday that if she see me walking around with a jacked up hair cut, just know I'm hooked.

Ladies, this was the most "unintentional" intimate experience I've had in a long time! So the next time you are looking for something to do with your Mr. just ask him to touch your hair and relax and enjoy it. You will thank me later.

How To Keep Curls ALL day?

I love rocking my big curly hair which starts out looking fabulous in the mornings. My curls are defined, shiny and frizz free. However, by the end of the work day, more like half way through, my hair turns into a frizzy, untamed mess. Any suggestions on how I can keep my style looking fresh all day?

This was a question I received from my coworker on Friday. To be honest with you, I still struggle with achieving all day hair with certain styles. But here are a few of my suggestions:

1) Product-is the most important factor because the right one and/or combination can combat frizz and keep your curls popping all day. You will certainly have to experiment in this arena because you have to find the right product and the right balance of products.

2) Cut-the hair cut is another important factor because a fresh cut can make all of the difference. This is the area I struggle the most with because my hair needs a shape.

3) Retouching is essential. So just as you would freshen your makeup, try refreshing your curls periodically throughout the day.

4) When all else fails, have a back up plan, carry scrunchies, hair pins or an accessory to restyle your hair if necessary.

Any other suggestions, ladies?

Morning ladies! Last night I decided to roll the ends of my hair with yellow flexi-rods to see if I can rekindle the love affair with my curls. When I woke up this morning, I dashed for the mirror to see if anything magical happened... (snickering) It did!!! I love, love, love the results, so I jumped in front of the web cam for a little camera action this morning. Excuse the bags under my eyes...but noticed I did put on a little gloss and accessories for y'all!

Lately I've grown so tired of my wash n'go, frankly I think I outgrew it. So I had been wearing my hair blown out to go for a more refined, age appropriate look. Ladies, I'm in my... uhm (never mind). But anyway, you can only straighten your hair so much before the damage sets in, so I started seeking alternative styles before that happened.

I tried this style early last year and loved the results, so I decided to try it again to see what happens. Basically, it's a MIX SET. I call it that because it's a combination of flex-rod and wash and go. I co-washed my hair, set it with setting lotion and Cantu leave-in. Then used the yellow flexi-rods to curl just the ends.

The result is a wash and go look that's a looks a little more polished than my standard look. I'm loving it.

The weird pose always renders the best curl view? I don't knnow why...

I was in the nail salon the other night and the technician, asked me, "Is that your real hair?" I replied, "yes".

She said is it naturally curly like that, and I replied "yes". Then the mother of all offensive questions came next, "do you mind if I touch it". Then she said, "it's very soft and pretty" and proceeded to talk in another language to the other technicians. Whoooosah.

But after sitting there for the next 30-45 minutes trying to rationalize what had just taken place, I started to think about all of the stereotypes that people (not just other nationalities) believe about black hair. In my example, the technician addressed three common stereotypes that most people believe about black hair. (1) We all wear weave (2) Our hair is hard and (3) Our hair is not naturally curly.

I know you guys are wondering what I did or said to her. Trust me I wanted to lay into her, but I kept my calm and answered every question politely. I even allowed her to touch my hair. See, I've decided to no longer take offense to every ignorant question or stereotype but rather use those moments a time to enlighten.

"Mommy, what's nappy hair?"

So last night, while I was preparing my hair for bed my 4 year old asked me THE question-what is nappy hair?

I paused, I swallowed, I gave the "deer in headlights" look. How do you answer this question to an impressionable 4-year old who is trying to establish a relationship with her hair?

What do you say, because whatever you say can be a defining moment in life and can really shape how she views hair and most importantly, her own.

So, after taking a few deep breaths, I kneeled down to her level and held her hands. I told her that "some people refer to tightly curled hair as nappy hair. Some people uses the word nappy as a bad word to hurt other's feelings. But you should not let anyone use that word to hurt your feelings. If someone ever say to you that you have "nappy hair". You look at them and say, "yes, my hair is beautiful."

It's never to early to try to build self esteem in our young ladies, because we are loosing the battle to the superficial-ness (is that a word?) that exists in the world. So, answering that question was so important for me, yet so nerve reckoning. HOW DID I DO? What would you say to your 4-year old given this situation?

My Stylist Never Told Me...

I was recently reunited with probably one of the best hair stylists I ever had-thank you Facebook. So I've been contemplating making an appointment with her to have my hair cut into layers. I've also been thinking about whether or not I want to just go for the cut or restart the regular relationship we once had. See, I haven't had a regular relationship with a stylist in about 5 years. So, I've been taking care of my hair on my own except for the handful of times, I may have gotten a trim or a color, etc.

Well, all of this got me to thinking about if rebuilding a regular relationship with a stylist would even be beneficial to my hair. Since I've been taking care of my hair on my own, this is the longest and healthiest my hair has ever been. Do I really want to take the chance and put my hard work back in the hands of someone else? hmmm.

What I have learned along that way is that stylists, even the best stylists don't do very much to teach clients about hair care. When I think back to my days of going to my stylists, I realized a whole list of beneficial information that they never shared.

About heat-Yeah, they all told me not to put heat in my hair everyday but never educated me about alternative ways to keep my style in place. Like show me how to properly wrap my hair at night, wear a satin scarf, try pin curls, etc. So like me, I'm sure most of us, resort to putting heat in our hair to try to maintain that fresh out of the stylist chair look and end up burning all of our hair out. Thus the cycle begins.

About cuts-I was never told that I did not have to cut my ends every six weeks when I visited for a touch up. So, I allowed them to snip away at every relaxer session to keep my ends healthy so my hair could grow (side eye). Hence the fact my hair never grew past my shoulders even though I was going every two weeks religiously.

About product-I was always curious about products. So I would regularly ask for product suggestions or what brands are good for the hair. I eventually found myself broke from trying all of the new products that hit the market or salon. I had enough products to open a beauty supply. But, I was never informed about benefits or detriments of certain ingredients in products. Nor was I made aware of the benefits of natural products like EVOO, Shea Butter, etc.

The list goes on, but these were just some of the immediate thoughts I was contemplating while making my decision. Don't get me wrong there are many benefits to going to a good stylist I guess it all depends on what goals you have in mind for your hair. Right now, my goal is to continue to grow, so for now I may hold off on that regular relationship and just go for the trim.

Now that you are natural and more knowledgeable, do you ever think back to all of the things your stylist did not tell you when you were on the creamy crack? lol. Isn't is quite scary?

It's Monday Randomness

It's not that I don't have anything to post about because I do, however, Superbowl festivities wore me out last night. So much that I didn't even prep my hair---so I will be rocking the "hot mess" look today. I will check with you tomorrow.

What does the shoes have to do with to post? Absolutely nothing! I'm just in love with them and saving my pennies to get them one day. In case you want to know, they are Christian Louboutin.

"I've been with my boyfriend for 3 years and I recently decided to go natural last year. He never showed any interest in my hair so I never asked him how he felt about my decision prior to going natural. Recently, I asked him and he told me he prefers me with straight hair. I love my natural hair, but I also want to feel attractive to my man. I am at crossroads.

Letters To Urbancurlz: Wash-N-Go Troubles

"I have recently just started to wear my natural hair "down" in the wash and go style. It is really cute during the day it keeps the moisture and everything. However, when I go to sleep and wake up it is all over my head! I do sleep with a satin bonet every night as well I moisturize it before I go to sleep but it never fails that I will wake up and all my curls are gone and its just a hot nappy matted mess! As a result I have resorted to redoing my wash and go everyday wetting my hair everyday and re applying all my products."

My first question: What can I do to keep my wash and go style at least for two days?

My second question: Is it bad to co-wash your hair everyday?

Obtaining second day hair on a wash-n-go set can be tricky because it depends on a couple of different factors. One being your hair texture. The second is the product that you set it with. And finally, how much you manipulate the hair on the first day.

So first, I recommend looking at the product that you're using. Some products provide a better hold than others. For example, when I set my wash n go's with conditioners like Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, etc. second day hair is nearly impossible. However, when I use setting lotion, the next day my curls are still defined. So sample the wash-n-go set with several different products and pay attention to which one yields the most success.

Manipulation is another factor that can help or hinder second day hair. On the first day, try not to bother with the curls much. Once dried, usually, I just tugged on the curls just a little to fluff it out some. On the second day and beyond, I fluff hair a little more. Sometimes I apply a little heat from the blow dryer to stretch out the curls.

Finally, texture is also an important factor because some textures frizz or matt more easily than others. This can sometime prevent you from refreshing the curls the next day without re-wetting the hair. Unfortunately, there is not a lot you can do about that. But before throwing in the towel, I recommend trying the aforementioned tips. Continue to wear your bonnet at night or sleep on a satin pillow. And continue to moisturize because that is also an important step.

On the topic of everyday co-washing. I am too guilty of this, but there is really no harm in co-washing daily. So far, the only downside I've found is that the hair accumulates build-up more easily. In that case, I just do a ACV rinse.
